Bentonite for Extruded Ceramic Bodies: Balancing Plasticity and Drying Behaviour

بواسطة hermano-newmaterials October 11th, 2026 4 مشاهدات
Extruded ceramic bodies need to deform through a die and retain their shape afterward.

Bentonite can be investigated as a plasticity and cohesion modifier, particularly where the existing mineral blend has limited workability. Its value should be measured against water demand, extrusion behaviour and drying performance. Identify the Forming Problem

Identify the Forming Problemure, mixing, de-airing and die condition should be assessed alongside raw-material selection. An additive trial is most informative when the baseline process is repeatable.

Compare Moisture and Workability
Prepare a control and candidate bentonite additions using consistent mixing and ageing procedures.

Two comparisons can be useful: performance at the same moisture, and performance at similar workability. Record any additional water needed to reach the target forming condition.

This prevents a moisture change from being mistaken for an additive effect.

Observe Extrusion and Shape Retention
Record extrusion pressure or equipment load where available, surface quality, dimensions and deformation after forming.

Use representative tooling and production conditions. Small hand-formed specimens provide preliminary information but cannot establish extrusion performance.

Follow Drying and Firing
Measure drying shrinkage and inspect for cracks or distortion.

Compare specimens with the same geometry under the intended drying schedule. Also check dry strength and fired properties.

A useful grade provides a workable balance between forming benefits and subsequent dimensional control.

Connect Mineral Supply with Production Trials
Buyers should provide the body composition, target product, moisture range and current defects.

HERMANO supplies bentonite for ceramic-body evaluation. Representative trials can help establish whether a candidate grade supports your extrusion process and finished-product requirements.
