Bentonite Drilling Mud: Why Higher Viscosity Does Not Always Mean Better Fluid-Loss Control

بواسطة hermano-newmaterials October 11th, 2026 3 مشاهدات
When drilling-fluid performance falls below expectations, increasing bentonite concentration can appear to be a straightforward solution.

However, viscosity and fluid-loss control describe different properties. A thicker mud does not necessarily provide the filtration behaviour required by the formation.

Understanding this distinction helps contractors evaluate bentonite grades and select additives more effectively.

Separate Flow Behaviour from Filtration

Viscosity describes resistance to flow under specified conditions. Filtration testing examines how much liquid passes through a test medium under a defined pressure and period.

The remaining filter cake provides additional information about the fluid.

CETCO’s drilling-fluid guidance discusses viscosity and fluid-loss testing separately, including situations where poorly prepared bentonite fluids produce undesirable filter-cake characteristics.

A funnel-viscosity result should therefore be interpreted alongside filtration data.

Examine Preparation Before Changing the Formula

Check the mixing water, dispersion process, hydration time and contamination history.

A grade that performs well under controlled conditions may produce different results when mixed with unsuitable water or used before sufficient hydration.

Compare fresh and used fluids. Excavated solids can change the measurements, so adding powder without understanding the cause may complicate the system.

Evaluate Filtrate and Filter Cake Together
Record filtrate volume under a stated method, together with cake thickness and relevant observations.

Do not compare results produced using different pressures, temperatures or preparation procedures as though they were equivalent.

Laboratory filtration tests support screening and comparison. They do not reproduce every formation or establish that a fluid will prevent all circulation losses.

Select Additives by Their Function
Commercial filtration-control products demonstrate that fluid loss can be adjusted without the same increase in viscosity.

For example, Bentonite Performance Minerals describes its PAC-L product as reducing filtration with limited viscosity impact, while its PAC-R product also increases viscosity.

These are product-specific examples. The appropriate additive and concentration must be evaluated in the intended bentonite system.

Large fractures or voids require a different assessment from routine filtration into porous ground.

Compare a Balanced Fluid System

A useful trial compares the base bentonite fluid with candidate adjustments under consistent conditions.

Evaluate rheology, filtration, mixing practicality and compatibility with the equipment.

HERMANO supplies bentonite for water-based drilling fluids. Share your current viscosity, filtration results, water analysis and formation conditions to discuss sample evaluation.
